POLICE have arrested a North-East man on suspicion of terrorism offences in a major operation. 

Officers from Counter Terrorism Policing North East, supported by Northumbria Police, arrested the suspect in Newcastle on Tuesday morning.

The 33-year-old man, who lives in Newcastle, was arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

He has been taken to a police station in West Yorkshire for questioning after the operation on Phillip Place in the Arthur's Hill area.

Police have cordoned off parts of the surrounding area and there are reports that some residents have been evacuated.

A force spokesperson said the arrest was intelligence led and pre-planned as part of an ongoing investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing North East. 

They added that residents will be kept as informed as possible and the public's understanding, patience and support while enquiries continue is appreciated.

Chief Superintendent Neil Hutchison, local policing commander for Newcastle, said: “I understand our communities will have concerns about this morning’s police activity but I want to offer my reassurance that we are here to serve and protect the public of Northumbria.

“We work very closely with our colleagues in Counter Terrorism Policing North East and we will ensure we maintain these strong links in order to provide a high level of service to you.

"Public safety is our utmost concern.

“Our officers are patrolling the local area and would ask members of the public to contact them if they have any concerns."
