HUNDREDS of shoppers enjoyed an icy treat on Saturday when stunning sculptures were set up around Darlington town centre.

A set of angel wings, a frozen Rudolph, Aladdin's magic lamp, a steam locomotive and Olaf the snowman took centre stage when the temporary pieces of artwork popped up along the ice trail.

Young and old were able to explore the town centre as they followed a specially created map to connect the ten ice sculptures.

The map also included a competition entry coupon with a chance to win panto tickets and enjoy Louie Spence and Zoe Birkett performing in Aladdin at Darlington Hippodrome.

Visitors were also in with a chance of winning a variety of prizes on offer through the #LoveDarlo Facebook page.

Sarah Henderson, who was in the town centre with her two children eight-year-old Josh and Evie, 3, said: "The sculptures are really beautiful and Evie has loved finding them all over the town centre. It's a really simple idea that is really good for the town."

Free street entertainment and festive music, including the North Tyneside Steel Band and local singer Charlea B, added to the sense of fun and joy around the town centre.

Emma Jones, who was shopping with husband Nick and their six-year-old daughter Luci, said: "The sculptures are great – Luci really enjoyed looking at them, especially Olaf and the genie lamp.

"It certainly added a bit of festive fun while we were shopping and the street entertainers were good fun."

Darlington Libraries’ Centre for Local Studies also put together a glittering display to help visitors get into the festive spirit.
