CAUGHT in traffic on the A66 this morning in County Durham? Well this might have been why.

Durham Police were escorting these huge dumper trucks along the road as they made their way towards the south.

Cleveland & Durham Specialist Operations Unit tweeted an apology on Wednesday afternoon to motorists caught up in the convoy.

The Northern Echo:

"Sorry if you were cought up in the disruption this morning folks. These mammoth vehicles need to be escorted for everyone's safety. Appreciate your patience on this grey, wet day," they wrote.

Officers said the slow moving load "was picked up on the M6 and left to continue its merry journey along the A1 heading south".
