THE public sector body that manages Britain’s rail infrastructure has been urged to contribute towards measures to mitigate increased closures of a level crossing at a congestion hotspot.

Almost three years after the Department for Transport announced rail services between York and the North Yorkshire coast would double in frequency from December 2019, North Yorkshire County Council’s Thirsk and Malton constituency committee heard calls for Network Rail to help fund schemes to help motorists and pedestrians in Malton and Norton.

Councillor Caroline Goodrick said: “Given that we are going to see an increase in the number of trains that are going to go across the level crossing, I think it is incumbent on Network to provide some funding to help.

“It is going to close that railway crossing more often than it is now, which causes significant problems with the traffic.”

The meeting was told Network Rail had indicated there was money available for “off-track” improvements.
