THE A66 has been reopened between Bowes and Penrith after two lorries were blown over in high winds overnight.

Highways England closed the road throughout the night and into Thursday morning between the A67 near Bowes, all the way to the A6, near Penrith.

Emergency services awaited daylight to make assessment on how to recover HGVs safely and whether weather conditions would allow the road to reopen.

The road was reopened eastbound at around 9am and westbound at 11am.

The A67 westbound from B6277 Lartington Lane (Barnard Castle) to A66 (Bowes) was also closed but has now reopened.
