AN ARTIFICIAL Christmas tree standing 23ft tall on a North Yorkshire high street has been defended after earning the infamous brand of 'Britain's worst Christmas tree'.

The tree, which has been likened to a cone, is now in place outside Northallerton's Town Hall. But critics of the giant artificial greenery are being urged reserve judgement until it is ceremonially lit up on Sunday, December 2.

Julia Robinson, Northallerton Business Improvement District (BID) manager, said: “People are rushing to judgement during the installation, but we are convinced many will change their minds when they see the tree glistening with thousands of lights throughout December.

“We believe it will enhance the town centre during the busy festive period as thousands visit Northallerton to buy their Christmas presents on our vibrant High Street."

BID perused erecting a real Christmas tree in Northallerton in 2017, but were advised by North Yorkshire County Council it would need a pit or fixed frame to secure it, which would not be permitted on the Square.

“We are more than happy with the alternative, however," added Mrs Robinson.

"We’ve tried to strike a balance with safety barriers that protect the tree from vandalism, but do not detract from the spectacle.”

Santa arrives in Northallerton at noon on Sunday and the tree will be lit at 4pm when he departs on his sleigh. The Three Wise Men on camels, nativity scenes and carol singalongs will also be part of the Christmas extravaganza.

There is also a Northallerton Pole workshop for children to enjoy on Central Arcade.
