FORMER England footballer Paul Gascoigne has been charged with sexual assault by touching.

British Transport Police said the incident happened while the 51-year-old was on a train from York to Durham on August 20.

The former Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Spurs and Lazio star was arrested by officers at Durham Station after a woman alleged that he touched her inappropriately.

Gascoigne was held at the station but later released pending further inquiries as police appealed for witnesses.

He took to Twitter to protest his innocence, saying he had stepped in to comfort a woman after she was called "a fat cow". Two of his tweets regarding the case were deleted minutes later.

A police spokeswoman said: "A man is due to appear in court next month charged in connection with the sexual assault of a woman on board a train from York to Durham.
