AN internet troll who posted offensive material about a Durham University student who was crushed to death outside a nightclub has been jailed.

Paul Hind, 38, from Wark, near Hexham, called 20-year-old Olivia Burt, a 'sex worker' and 'prostitute' on Facebook.

Miss Burt, from Hampshire, died during an incident outside Durham's Missoula nightclub on February 7.

Hind also trolled the families of three other young people who had recently died– Leicester's Joe Tilley, who was found dead at the bottom of a waterfall in Colombia; Duncan Sim, from the Scottish Borders, and Hannah Witheridge, from Norfolk, who was killed on the Thai island of Koh Tao.

This morning, at Newcastle Crown Court, Hind was jailed for 14 months, after he previously admitted four charges of conveying false information which was indecent or grossly offensive.

After an earlier court hearing, he said he was 'deeply sorry' for his actions. He said he was suffering from mental health issues and had acted 'for attention'.

Miss Burt's father Nigel has previously called Hind a 'sick sadist' whose actions had been a 'desecration' of his daughter's memory.
