THE family of a man who became fondly known by his town’s namesake have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support following his death.

Syd Howarth, who retired this month from the Newton News and Newton Press, in Newton Aycliffe, died on Monday.

His family announced “with great sadness” the 81-year-old’s death one year after a diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease.

They said: “The family would like to thank all those who have sent condolence cards, messages of sympathy, words of encouragement, social media compliments, email tributes and hugs.

“We are completely overwhelmed by the show of support given to the whole family at this sad time.”

Mr Howarth’s funeral will be held at St Clare’s Church, on Central Avenue, in Newton Aycliffe, on Saturday, November 10 at midday.

This will be followed by a cremation at Wear Valley Crematorium for family and close friends.

A funeral cortege will run from the Blue Bridge along St Cuthbert’s Way prior to the service.

Extra seating will be made available in the two church halls as well as speakers posted outside if necessary. Well-wishers are invited to join the family in a celebration of Mr Howarth’s life at the Xcel Centre where a bar and refreshments will be available.

Mr Howarth requested no flowers but donations, if desired, are to be given to the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

They can be made at the service, funeral reception, at the Newton Press or to Whitehouse Funeral Directors.
