SERIOUS structural defects discovered by engineers during maintenance work have forced the ongoing closure of a bridge.

Witton Park Bridge, over the River Wear near Bishop Auckland, was meant be shut for 20 weeks from July for Durham County Council to partially rebuild, clean and paint it.

The authority this week said that during the work it found the bridge can no longer withstand the weight of traffic so it remains shut to vehicles, bikes and pedestrians until further notice.

Brian Buckley, the council's strategic highways manager, said: "We know that this extended closure will cause some inconvenience but safety must come first."

“We'd like to thank residents for their continued patience and understanding while we undertake a detailed assessment of the issues identified and determine the most appropriate way forward."

Temporary scaffolding was yesterday replaced with fences to prevent access to the bridge.

Investigations will take place over the coming months aim to establish the extent of the damage and possible repairs.

In the meantime the C93 is closed between Witton Park and High Grange, with a signed diversion continuing via the A68 and Witton-le-Wear.
