WEDNESDAY night's stunning sunset had photographers rushing to grab their cameras.

Here are a selection of photos from The Northern Echo's Camera Club.

We contacted the Met Office for an explanation as to why we get such vivid skies and here's what they said:

"During sunrise and sunset the sun is low in the sky, meaning sunlight must travel through more of our atmosphere before reaching our eyes.  "Much of blue light, which has a short wavelength, gets scattered away, leaving behind more reds and yellows for us to see," a spokesman said.

"The weather plays a significant part in how we see the sunset – if there are some clouds around we’ll see different shades of oranges and reds, just like in the pictures your readers have sent in. But if it’s raining and overcast, we won’t see any of it at all!"
