A POLICE dog has been praised for his work in recovering stolen goods after a burglary at a cricket club.

PC Kevin Hickey and police dog Mickey from Northumbria Police were first to respond to a call notifying them a burglar alarm had been activated at Swalwell Cricket Club in Derwenthaugh Park.

They discovered intruders had broken in by the back door stealing several items and began searching woodland near the club.

In minutes the six-year-old German Shepherd had sniffed out the stolen objects, recovering a discarded charity box, alcohol, and an iPad.

PD Hickey said: "Mickey is a fantastic dog who really loves what he does and it is always great when you get this kind of result."
