TIME is running out for people to register their interest in a new garden waste collection service.

The deadline for Darlington residents to indicate their interest in the ‘opt in’ service is Friday, October 26, after which a final decision will be made before the scheme will be introduced.

Already more than 3,250 householders have signed up and if it goes ahead they will pay a £35 annual fee to cover the running costs for the new service, which will be introduced in April next year.

Councillor Nick Wallis, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for leisure and the local environment, said: “It’s great to see that so many householders are interested in a garden waste collection service, which clearly shows there is a demand for it among those in the borough who have gardens.

“There is still time to register your interest and encourage anyone who has not already done so to let us know so a final decision can be made. Hopefully we can then introduce this valuable new service in April next year.”
