A STORM Callum caused havoc for an air ambulance crew responding to an emergency on Saturday.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) crew was called to an incident in Frosterley, County Durham, at 10.20am, after a man in his 20s had been hurt when a piece of farm machinery overturned.

A spokesman for GNAAS said the weather was described as "atrocious" that morning and initially a doctor and paramedic were sent by road to treat the patient.

About 30 minutes later, the conditions subsided and the air crew were able to join them and flew the patient to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough.

"The flight took twenty minutes in very difficult conditions," he said.

The man's injuries are not known but are not thought to be life-threatening.

GNAAS is a charity and relies on donations. Last year it needed to raise £5m to survive.
