DRIVERS are being warned to be on guard after a spate of vehicles crimes in the Bowburn area, near Durham, over the last few days.

Around half a dozen cars have been targeted during the hours of darkness, mainly in the Grange Way and Harle Oval area.

It is thought that opportunist thieves are simply trying car doors until they find an unlocked vehicle and helping themselves to whatever contents are inside.

Police are investigating and are following a number of leads, but are asking motorists to take care with their valuables.

Detective sergeant Chris Woollett said: “In some cases, they have got inside the vehicle and found nothing to steal, but in others they have made off with valuable property.

“Our advice is simple – make sure you lock your car and make sure you don’t leave valuables inside.”
