A YOUNG golfer from Chester-le-Street is teeing up for a bright future after winning a major North-East golfing tournament.

James Lusk, 14, was the overall winner at this year’s Under 21 Mizuno Race 2 Rockcliffe tournament.

The teenager, who plays at Chester-le-Street Golf Club, shot a gross score of 78 at the competition final which saw him crowned as the 2018 champion and picked up a £500 voucher for his efforts.

PGA Professional Doug Brolls has coached James for the last six years at Cocken Lodge Driving Range Golf course, who also sponsor James by letting him use the facilities.

Mr Brolls said: “He is clearly a very talented young lad but he works hard. He is committed and has an excellent work rate. He always gives 100 per cent and this is what makes him stand out in a number of ways.

“He has the ability to go a long way and if he wants it, to aim for a career in the game.”

James, who is a pupil at the Hermitage Academy, has not only reduced his handicap from 28 to seven in less than 15 months, he has also secured a major sponsorship deal with United Carlton Office Systems.

James said: “I am really happy with how things have gone this season, and to win the Race 2 Rockcliffe competition feels great.

“I would especially like to thank Doug Brolls, my sponsors and my junior liaison officers at Chester-le-Street Golf Club for their continued support and advice.”
