A BUSY road was closed following reports of a group trying to cut down a tree with a chainsaw in the early hours of this morning.
A man and woman have been arrested following what appears to be concerted attempts to fell a tree outside Manjaros restaurant on Middlesbrough’s Linthorpe Road.
Emergency services descended upon the area shortly after 1am and quickly closed the road, a main thoroughfare, in both directions.
The tree was left with the chainsaw still inside its trunk and had to be cut down by a tree surgeon who arrived at the scene at around 3am.
A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said: “Police received numerous calls from the public just after 1am today reporting a small group of people damaging a tree with a petrol chainsaw on Linthorpe Road.”
A 31-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and remain in custody awaiting questioning.
