SCHOOLCHILDREN are helping decorate an army of cardboard soldiers which will create a ‘trail’ across Hambleton to mark the 100-year anniversary of the end of World War 1.
The 100 soldiers – one for every year – will be placed in groups of 20 in the district’s five market towns.
Youngsters from Scribble in Northallerton and from Snape Youth Club are pictured decorating the soldiers, which will then be placed in in shops, businesses and community venues in Northallerton, Thirsk, Bedale, Easingwold and Stokesley.
Each soldier will incorporate a letter and local people will be set the challenge of finding the 20 letters in each town and unscrambling the anagram they create.
They can then submit their entry into a prize draw.
The soldier trail is one of two art installations being planned by Hambleton District Council to mark the centenary – a piece of artwork is also being commissioned to display at the Civic Centre in Northallerton. Artists have already been asked for their ideas which include suggestions for a wicker plane incorporating the iconic poppy.
