RAFAEL BENITEZ has been charged by the Football Association for his pre-match comments ahead of Newcastle United’s game at Crystal Palace last weekend.

Benitez is facing a charge after he referenced match referee, Andre Marriner, ahead of his side’s trip to Selhurst Park.

The Newcastle manager discussed Marriner in relation to Wilfried Zaha’s comments earlier in the week, with the Crystal Palace winger having pleaded for greater protection from match officials, claiming someone would have to “break his leg” to receive a red card.

Benitez said: “I have a lot of confidence in Andre Marriner. He has a lot of experience, even if his record with our players is not the best in terms of red cards.

“I’m quite confident he’s a very good referee with experience, and he will deal with things on the pitch in a normal way.”

Benitez has until 6pm on Friday to appeal the charge, which could lead to a warning, fine or touchline ban.
