A YOUNG girl raised hundreds of pounds for the RNLI by competing in the Junior Great North Run.

Millie Crangle, aged nine, took part in the event on Saturday September 8 where she joined thousands of other nine to 16-year-olds in the 1.5 mile race around the Newcastle Gateshead Quayside.

She decided to raise money for the Hartlepool RNLI lifeboat station, on Ferry Road, where her father Mark Crangle is a member and a volunteer.

In the run-up to the race Millie collected over £400 for the charity through sponsors.

She said: "It was great fun taking part in the event with all the other runners at Newcastle and the training really helped.

"I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who sponsored me."

Mr Crangle said: "Both myself and wife Karen are extremely proud of Millie."

"It was a pleasure to watch her taking part in the run and knowing that her fundraising effort will help save lives at sea by supporting the work of the RNLI."

Hartlepool RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager, Chris Hornsey, said staff and volunteers were delighted with the donation.

He said: "The money raised will both help train and provide some of the best kit available for our volunteer crew members."
