TENS of thousands of people attended the sixth Festival of Thrift this weekend.

The multi-award winning festival held at Kirkleatham Estate in Redcar attracts people from across the north of England and beyond.

Alongside the packed programme of events across the weekend, the focus for 2018 was about highlighting the centenary of women’s suffrage plus activities to encourage the use of green transport with a cycle hub and bike-themed performances.

For the first time the festival started with a launch parade into Redcar town centre on the evening before it opened and the event featured its own Picnic Cinema and camping on Saturday night.

Councillor Carl Quartermain, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council’s cabinet member for leisure, tourism and communications, said: “The Festival of Thrift is a truly fantastic event of national importance which seems to grow every year and we are delighted that it is being held at our wonderful Kirkleatham Estate once again.”

Film fans also enjoyed a treat when they had the chance to see the thrifty one take re-shoot of the Atonement Redcar beach scene, featuring local actor-volunteers – and a unicorn.

Blacksmithing, Swedish birch bark weaving and garland-making, and cooking with fire and smoke were among the wide and varied range of workshops throughout the weekend.
