HEALTH bosses are calling for improved diagnoses rates for dementia patients.

NHS Hambleton, Richmondshire and Whitby Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), responsible for the planning and purchasing of the vast majority of health services across the area, is supporting Alzheimer’s Society’s Right to Know campaign.

There are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over one million by 2025, but according to national NHS and government statistics, only 66.1per cent of people with dementia receive a formal diagnosis.

The CCG is working with GP practices to help understand any difficulties around dementia diagnosis that might prevent patients being offered appropriate support.

Dr Mark Hodgson, GP and CCG governing body member said:

“We’re keen to raise awareness of dementia and very much support the Right to Know campaign from Alzheimer’s Society which aims to ensure people living with dementia receive a formal diagnosis and that everyone diagnosed is fully supported.”
