A TEACHER has been recognised for his enduring contribution to grassroots rugby and named a "hero of the game".
Yarm Preparatory School games teacher Chris Simpson has earned the praise as part of a campaign by Premiership Rugby sponsors Gallagher to champion people within the game that embody the values and spirit of rugby, both on and off the pitch.
It acknowledges individuals whose determination, energy and commitment demonstrate their passion to protect and grow the game.
The accolade is acknowledgement of Mr Simpson's voluntary work at the Newcastle Falcons after running regular coaching camps and club days at Kingston Park in conjunction with the Falcons Community Foundation.
He then became head coach and latterly director of rugby at Houghton.
Bill Sawyer, head of Yarm Preparatory School, said: “Chris is a real asset to the school as one of our specialist sports and PE teachers."
