A FOOTBALL tournament has been held to raise awareness of mental health.

MFC Foundation, the charity arm of Middlesbrough Football Club, hosted the Heads Up five-a-side tournament in South Bank, Middlesbrough on Friday.

Organisations from across the region pledged to down tools for an afternoon, turn their phones and monitors off, and join both the Foundation and 3AAA for some friendly physical competition.

The message of the day was to help readdress the work-life balance for people in Teesside, and offer avenues to help those struggling with mental health related issues.

Ann-Marie Anderson, MFC Foundation’s business development manager, said: “Mental health is a very prominent topic at the moment, and it’s important for people to know that there is always someone to talk to.

“Being active and enjoying some sport is a great way of relieving stress and anxiety, which is the reason we came up with this tournament.

“Our programmes have successfully helped many adults and children overcome a range of mental health issues, and funds raised from the event will be put into helping more."
