THREE casualties were taken to hospital, two by air ambulance, following a serious collision which led to a lengthy closure on the A1 in the North-East.
The accident, on a stretch of the Morpeth bypass, in Northumberland, was reported at about 11am.
Several ambulances, including the hazardous response team, attended the scene and air ambulance back-up was requested.
Two casualties were subsequently separately airlifted to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, while a third injured person was taken by road ambulance to the hospital.
The entre stretch of the western bypass of Morpeth was closed in both directions as a result of the accident, with traffic soon slowing to a halt approaching on both north and southbound carriageways.
A diversion was put in place via Morpeth, itself, from the A197 Clifton turn-off to the Pottery Bank, Morpeth North junction.
