Public Meeting

A PUBLIC meeting is being held on Monday, September 17 to give people a say on Durham County Council’s proposal to build its new headquarters on the Sands car park, Durham, with a nearby multi-storey car park. It takes place in the Town Hall, in Market Place, from 6.30pm. It is being organised by the City of Durham Parish Council, which is objecting to the plans. All are welcome to attend and speak.

Memory walk

PEOPLE are being urged to Unite Against Dementia and take part in the Castle Eden Dene Memory Walk and Open Day on Saturday September 29. It starts at 10.30am at the Dene Lodge and funds go to the Alzheimer's Society. There is a walk and nature trail for all abilities and wheelchairs, a stroll with moderate inclines and a more challenging 8km scenic walk. Adults £5, with under-16s free. Fireworks night

THE Riverside fireworks display in Chester-le-Street, staged in partnership with the Firefighter's Charity, takes place on Sunday, November 4 and will be choreographed to songs from the musical The Greatest Showman.

Fireworks will be set off from 6.30pm and entertainment will be provided by Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist Jamie Lee Harrison and the three-piece band Jennison.

Tickets are available for £5 each via www.riversidefireworks.co.uk. It is free for children aged under six.

New canon

THE Reverend Charlotte Allen, a non-stipendiary minister at St Thomas and St Edmund churches in Salisbury, Wiltshire, has been appointed canon chancellor at Durham Cathedral and takes up her post this month.

Pit reunion

A REUNION of ex-colliery mechanics at the former Dawdon pit, near Seaham, which closed in 1991, takes place on Saturday October 6, from 7pm. It takes place at Dawdon Colliery Welfare. All are welcome, including newcomers.
