POLICE on Wednesday night lifted a cordon from streets near York Minster after a man who officers say was intending to harm himself was brought to safety.

North Yorkshire Police tweeted that the man had been taken to hospital 'to receive the support he needs' and the incident had been resolved.

They added: "Trained police negotiators spent several hours at the scene, alongside fire and ambulance service colleagues. Cordons in the area are now being lifted. Thanks to everyone for their patience tonight."

The force had tweeted at 8pm that it was 'dealing with an incident involving concern for the welfare of a man at York Minster,' and nearby roads including Duncombe Place and High Petergate were cordoned off, adding: "Please avoid the area. It’s extremely important that emergency services are able to work at the scene."

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said it had sent firefighters to the scene to assist police but could give no further details.
