THE circus is coming to town for five days, with the first performance taking place tonight.

Circus Sallai, featuring magicians, jugglers, clowns and acrobats, has set up near The Northern Echo Arena, off Neasham Road, until Sunday.

A 50-man crew, with 20 trucks and vans transporting three miles of electrical cables and 1.2 miles of water pipes with connections, has been setting up on-site ready for Darlington's first performance.

The circus is led by ringmistress and tenth generation performer Angel Sallai, and boasts artists from as far afield as Hungary, Argentina and Italy.

Circus Sallai, one of the UK's biggest travelling circuses, opens tonight at 7.30pm, with shows at 5pm and 7.30pm daily until Saturday, which includes an extra performance at 2pm.

The final show will begin at 2pm on Sunday, September 16.

From there it will travel to Thirsk, pitching up for shows between Wednesday, September 19 and Sunday, September 23.
