A MUM diagnosed with breast cancer during her second pregnancy was “bursting with pride” as her daughter crossed the finish line of a run undertaken for a charity close to their hearts.

Jennifer Beaumont, 40, of Bishop Auckland, was dealt the blow at 38-weeks pregnant earlier this year and gave birth just one week later.

She was given four weeks with baby Jack before embarking on a programme of treatment which has seen her finish a course of chemotherapy ahead of an impending operation and radiotherapy.

The family, of Bishop Auckland, has been supported by the Solan Connor Fawcett Family Cancer Trust which organised a series of trips throughout the summer for youngsters.

Her eight-year-old daughter Sophie Beaumont was one of those to be taken on the trips and as a thank you she decided to take part in the Mini Great North Run in Newcastle in the charity’s name.

Mrs Beaumont said: “When she first said she wanted to do it I was really touched.

“I was bursting with pride after everything we’ve been through. She has been so mature about it all.”

Thanks to the Spennymoor-based charity Sophie has been on visits to Lightwater Valley, Adventure Valley and Whitby over the last couple of months.

She completed the run in seven-and-half minutes alongside her father Stuart Beaumont, 42, on Saturday having already raised £790 for the trust in sponsorship.

“I didn’t know the charity existed until I was thrown into this position,” added Mrs Beaumont. “They put trips on every week in the summer holidays so children can have a fun thing to do despite what is going on at home.”

The mum-of-two fell pregnant last year in what she saw as a “miracle”.

In January she found lumps in her breast which at first were believed to be pregnancy-related.

However, in early April it materialised she had cancer.

On April 11 Mrs Beaumont had her now five-month-old son and started chemotherapy the following month.

August marked the end of her chemotherapy programme but not the end of her treatment.

“This is chapter one done,” she said. “Chapter two is a mastectomy and chapter three will be radiotherapy.

“The plan is to be cancer free by Christmas for our first Christmas with Jack.”

Mrs Beaumont, who works in customer services for RPMI in Darlington, has been told her tumour has now reduced in size by 1.5cm.
