A SENSORY spectacular has stunned spectators of a visual theatre show marking 100 years since the first British women were given the right to vote.

The Glass Ceiling performance is inspired by the Suffragettes and Suffragists and celebrates activists from the Tees Valley region whose courage propelled the historic movement to gain political recognition and rights.

Darlington's Market Square was illuminated with fireworks and strewn with ticker-tape during the show on Friday night, which will tour across the rest of the Tees Valley region in October.

The event, organised by Periplum, combines dramatic staging and pyrotechnics, as well as aerial performances, to bring together the story of hardship and struggle to break through the glass ceiling.

The production was first staged in the region during the Stockton International Riverside Festival last month.

The next performance of The Glass Ceiling will be held in Kirkleatham Grounds, in Redcar, on October 5.

Ward Jackson Park, in Hartlepool, will host a performance on October 19, followed by the final show in Centre Square, Middlesbrough, on October 27.
