CLEVELAND Police have referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct after a man suffered a head injury while being Tasered.

Detective Chief Superintendent John Lyons, the force’s director of standards and ethics, said just before 8.30pm last night (September 7), officers attended an address on The Front at Seaton Carew where a woman has reported an on-going violent incident inside the property.

Police say they attempted to detain the man when he came out of the property at 9.15pm and during attempts to subdue him, they deployed a Taser.

During the incident he suffered a head injury and is now being treated in James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

Det Chief Supt Lyons said in a statement: “A man came out of the address at around 9.15pm and during attempts to detain him, a Taser was deployed to protect officers and members of the public.

“The 27-year-old suffered a head injury during the incident and he is currently receiving treatment in James Cook University Hospital.

“As a matter of routine, the Force’s Department of Standards and Ethics was notified of the incident and they have referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

“Inquiries into the incident are on-going today and we would appeal for anyone with information relating to this incident to contact Cleveland Police via the 101 number quoting Event 165616."
