A WOMAN who was fatally stabbed in the shop where she worked has been formally identified as Joan Hoggett.

The 62-year-old, from the Grindon area of Sunderland, died following an incident at the One Stop Shop, on Sea Road, in Fulwell, on Wednesday night.

Police were called at 10.41am and found Mrs Hoggett badly wounded.

She was taken to hospital, but died from her injuries.

Her family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Mrs Hoggett was popular member of staff who was well-known to local residents.

Samantha Willis, 55, said: "I burst into tears when I heard. She was a lovely lady, very sweet, always on at night and she worked hard."

Shakeel Rahman, 44, who works in a mobile phone shop nearby, said: "She was nice and polite.

"She only served me two days before. It is such a shame it happened to her."

Derek Campbell, 55, added: "I have lived in the street for eight years. She's a nice lady, helpful, like all of them in that shop."

A 19-year-old man, who police said ‘does not live in the immediate vicinity’ has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

A One Stop spokesperson added: "We are shocked and saddened by the incident, our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to our colleague's family and friends at this difficult time.

"We are currently supporting all colleagues involved and assisting police with their enquiries.

"Due to the nature of the incident, we are unable to comment any further at this time."

Forensic officers were seen going into the shuttered shop, which was at the centre of a wide police cordon and included side streets and back alleys.

Specialist search officers in blue boiler-suits and plastic gloves were seen arriving at the crime scene and officers used climbing ladders to search above shop fronts.

Police are still establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Officers also cordoned off Roker Park and Cornthwaite Park as part of their enquiries.

Superintendent Paul Milner, of Northumbria Police, said: “I would like to pass on my sincere condolences to Joan’s family at this incredibly difficult time.

“My message to the community is clear; we believe this to be an isolated incident with no wider risk to the public.

“One man has been arrested in connection with Joan’s murder and is assisting police with their enquiries.

“Sea Road will be opened but a number of cordons remain in place, and as a result, I would like to thank residents and local businesses for their patience and cooperation.

“Anyone with any concerns is encouraged to speak to a nearby officer, and a police presence will remain in the area overnight.”

Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who was in the Sea Road, Roker Park and Cornthwaite Park areas at the time of the incident.

  • Anyone with information was asked to call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
