A NEW initiative to introduce people to trail running has seen 114 runners take part in the summer programme.

The six-week programme, organised by Hambleton District Council in partnership with local running clubs, involved everyone from experienced trail runners to those giving it a try for the first time.

The summer series of weekly social runs have now come to an end, with 55 people taking part in the final run in the Cleveland Hills around Osmotherley.

"The response to the series has been incredible,” said Mel Gurney the trail run leader.

“Each week we had between 40 and 50 runners taking on the beautiful trails around Osmotherley.

“We have had a great mixture of runners from the more experienced to those who have used the series to give the trails a go for the first time.

“It has been a challenge, but it’s been great to see more people giving trail running a try.

“Due to the success of the programme we are going to continue to meet up for social trail runs, with our next one being held at Kilburn Woods in Thirsk.”

Health and wellbeing development officer, David Earl, added: “Hambleton District Council has been working with local runners and running groups to help the community running scene grow and flourish for a number of years now.

“Trail running, in addition to all the accepted benefits of road running, has enormous mental health benefits plus amazing countryside and its fun too.”

Details of future runs can be found on Facebook at ‘Social Trails Osmotherley’.
