SPORTS celebrities will be taking part in  an annual charity fundraiser taking place in County Durham this month.

A host of former footballers will descend on Woodham Golf and Country Club, near Newton Aycliffe, on Friday, September 14, to battle it out in aid of sick youngsters.

Darlington Charity Cup, the organisers and charity behind a football cup that dates back to 1907, makes donations to children suffering from life-threatening illnesses.

Ben Smith, fundraiser, said the organisation was looking forward to the golf day and raising more funds for good causes.

On the celebrity sportsman line-up this year is Steve Howey, the former Newcastle and Manchester City defender, Kevin Ball, a Sunderland crowd hero, and Neil Maddison, Middlesbrough scout and former Darlington midfielder.

Others include ex-players from Leeds United, Darlington and Hartlepool United.

There will be 22 teams of roughly three people plus a celebrity.

A fundraiser will be held in the evening at the club featuring musical entertainment from 80s music group Rio, a comedian, auction and raffle.

Tickets for the event, which starts at 7pm, are £10 and include supper.
