ONE of the region's MPs – who has campaigned on the dangers of energy drinks – last night welcomed the Government's decision to support a ban on selling them to children.

Redcar MP Anna Turley said it was 'the right move to protect the health of the next generation'. She raised the issue in Parliament in April this year, with concerns that some brands contained the equivalent of five expressos in a single can.

Research led by North East universities – Teesside, Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, and Sunderland, as part the FUSE network on public health – found that consumption of energy drinks in the UK has increased by 185 per cent between 2006 and 2015, and that they are very easily available.

Ms Turley said: “I am really pleased the government have listened to the overwhelming strength of opinion and evidence on the dangers of sugar and caffeine in energy drinks, and will now introduce the ban we have been calling for. I encourage everyone to contribute to the consultation."
