ABOUT 50 tonnes of hay and straw were destroyed last night as a fire broke out in a farmer's field.
Firefighters tackled the large blaze at the site in between Fishburn Colliery and the A177, at about 9.45pm.
A spokeswoman for the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service confirmed four appliances attended the scene including one from Sedgefield, two from Spennymoor and one from Newton Aycliffe.
She said: "The incident reported was that approximately 50 tonnes of hay and straw were on fire but we don't yet know the cause of the fire and there is still one appliance on the scene this morning."
No one is thought to have been hurt during the incident.
It is not yet known what caused the fire.
