AN emu the loose on the A1(M) in County Durham caused chaos to motorists for the second day running.

Traffic officers were at the scene of the escaped bird on the motorway between junctions 59 (Newton Aycliffe) and 60 (Bradbury) at 12.30pm today.

A rolling block was put in place while the owner attempted to catch the animal.

At 1pm Highways England confirmed the emu had been taken away by its owner and was back in its field.

It was the second consecutive day the bird had escaped onto the A1 (M).

Highways England posted on Twitter that it had received reports of it on the carriageway between junction 57 (A66) and 58 (Burtree) at 5.48pm yesterday.

A spokesperson for Durham Police confirmed reports were made today about the emu by several motorists at about 10am.

Drivers also reported spotting the bird on the A1 in the same area the yesterday.

Making reference to entertainer Rod Hull, who rose to fame for his act with an emu sidekick, Highways England posted: "Hopefully we won't see him again other than on Top 50 Kids TV Programmes of the 1980s."
