A SCHOOLGIRL who lost her grandma to cancer has raised more than £200 for charity in her memory.

Laura Bauwens, 11, from Pickhill, near Thirsk, put her creative skills to good use by hand-making dozens of cards to sell to family, friends and neighbours.

Laura made cards to mark birthdays, Father’s Day and thank you cards.

She also sold homemade biscuits and has raised £226 so far for Cancer Research UK.

Laura undertook the fundraising in memory of her grandma Jean Grove who died of cancer aged 69 five-years-ago.

Since then Laura has regularly made cards and biscuits for charity and plans to expand on her fundraising exploits.

She said: “I’d like the money to be used to help people get better.”

Laura added that she now hopes to organise a fund-raising walk or cycle ride to raise even more money for Cancer Research UK.

The charity receives around £600million in donations each year to fund potentially life-saving research into the disease.

Lung, bowel and prostate cancer are currently the three biggest cancer killers among people in the UK and Cancer Research UK invests millions into finding new techniques to battle the disease.

The charity also organises popular fundraising events such as the Race for Life, with events taking place across the country throughout the year.
