SCREEN actor Robert Redford has announced his retirement after nearly 60 years in the business.

The 81-year-old said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he would retire after the release of his upcoming film, The Old Man & The Gun.

The Oscar winner from Santa Monica, in California, is best known for his role in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and his part in Out of Africa.

In 1980 the star won an Academy Award in his directorial debut for Ordinary People and later in 2002 he received a lifetime achievement Oscar.
