TUCKED away in a remote part of the Yorkshire Dales, high above the village of Booze, Hazel Harker’s farm may an unlikely hotspot for motorsport royalty.

But since part of the farmland first started hosting the renowned Scott Trial motocross course in the 1950s, Ms Harker has welcomed some of the sport’s biggest names into her home.

A signed picture of two-time Formula One World Champion Graham Hill hangs on Ms Harker’s wall, a gift, she explains, received after he ‘popped in for a cup of tea’ while he was out grouse shooting in Arkengarthdale.

Other big names in motorsport to call round for tea include Malcolm Rathmell , Graham Jarvis, Amos Bilbao, and Takahisa Fujinami to name a few.

And the latest addition to her motorsport memorabilia has come from multiple World Champion and trials bike legend Dougie Lampkin who sent Ms Harker a signed copy of his new book.

Inside, Mr Lampkin wrote a message thanking Ms Harker for all her help and praising the Scott Trial as the ‘greatest trial in the world’.

Ms Harker, who is coy about her age but says it’s safe to call her ‘a senior citizen’, has taken all the esteemed visitors in her stride and remains as passionate about motorsports as she was as a child.

She said: “Since the Scott Trial first started on our land I’ve never missed a race.

“I have always enjoyed watching them and although I’ve never ridden myself, my dad as a young fellow had a road motorbike and I know he had some good times on it.

“I learnt to drive the tractors on the farm and I have always liked the motors. I was never interested in horses, but tractors, yes!”

Ms Harker’s enthusiasm for motorsport extends to superbike racing.

She recalls a time when Dougie Lampkin and a few other riders were familiarising themselves with the Scott Trial when they spotted her and her brother Dennis glued to the TV in the farmhouse.

“They came and pulled up outside our house and we were watching the superbikes on the television,” said Ms Harker.

“They could see through the window.

“They said they couldn’t believe that we were all the way out here sat enjoying the superbikes, but I like watching motor racing on the television as much as I like watching anything else.”

Ms Harker is now gearing up for the next Scott Trial on October 18 and who knows what visitors the next race will bring.
