AN elderly woman was robbed as she made her way out of a Bishop Auckland supermarket.

Detectives are appealing for information following the incident involving the 68-year-old shopper.

Bishop Auckland police said the woman was leaving Morrisons at about 1pm on June 17 when a man bumped into her and bent down, taking her purse containing cash and bank cards.

The suspect was described as being a white male, in his late 30s with dark hair and wearing a black leather jacket.

He made off on foot in an unknown direction.

Later that day, a withdrawal of about £100 was made at Halifax, in Newgate Street.

PC Kirtley, from Bishop Auckland response, said: “This was a traumatic incident for the woman and we would like to ask the public to help us catch the people responsible”.

Police would also like to speak to two men captured on CCTV as they might be able to help officers with their inquiries.

  • Anyone who saw the incident or saw anything suspicious in either Morrisons or in the Newgate Street area, is asked to call PC Kirtley at Bishop Auckland on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555111.
