PUPILS have paid an emotional farewell to their school on its final day.
The school at Sherburn Hill, which is part of Sherburn Primary School, has now closed.
Children at the school put on a production of The Greatest Show to celebrate the history of the school, which has been running from the site since 1971 and bid farewell to the building.
Sherburn Hill resident Alison Curtis, who helped lead the campaign to keep the building open and whose granddaughter Anna-Leigh is a pupil, said: “It was very, very emotional. The kids were absolutely fantastic in their production.
“I’ve come out crying. The school was packed and there wasn’t a dry eye.”
Headteacher Susan Cornforth said: “It’s an important day to mark in the history of the school.”
In May, the community campaign to keep the facility in the village failed when members of Durham County Council’s cabinet voted to shut it.
From the start of next term, Sherburn Primary School will operate from a single site in Sherburn Village.
Talks are currently ongoing about the future of the Sherburn Hill building.
