TOP marks have been awarded to employers and students after a ground breaking new scheme to give youngsters experience and training in getting ready for work.

Year 10 students at Bedale High School were put through their paces by employers and business leaders with a mock interview following preparation of their application letters.

Potential employers who attended have applauded the scheme. Sarah Bright of Labman Automation in Seamer, near Stokesley said: “To have such talented students on our doorstep needs to be encouraged, there are many opportunities for engineers within North Yorkshire so we want to help nurture them.

“The event was fantastic, so many intelligent and determined 14 and 15 year olds took part. It was clear to see that the head teacher, Tony Rawdin, is passionate about ensuring his pupils get the best possible start. I wish that these types of events were more readily available when I was younger.

“We are currently working alongside many schools to help encourage children into science and technology careers and especially more girls into engineering.”

Other employers added their support. One said: "I’ve been going into schools for five years and this is by far the best.” Another added: "The students were absolutely fantastic and I would like to praise the staff for their work in preparing them so well’’

Teacher Geoff Chapman who organised the event said: “Our students stepped up to embrace this challenge after receiving coaching from business experts, the feedback from them was fantastic.

“We have been overwhelmed by the response from the local business community, it has allowed them to become involved in shaping their future workforce and they really enjoyed meeting our students.”

Youngsters are also examining placements and apprenticeships through the schools business friends group.
