A SUPERSONIC car designed not only to go faster than the speed of sound, but to travel at more then 1,000mph (1,600km/h) got students into gear at North Durham Academy in Stanley for the annual STEM week celebrations.

The Bloodhound Education supersonic car, which can cover a mile in just 3.6 seconds, was attempting to inspire the next generation of science, technology, engineering and maths students.

The Bloodhound car began testing in Newquay earlier this year and is nearing its pinnacle of attempting the world land speed record.

Aaron Bourne, academy lead, said: “Research has shown that within the next 20 years, STEM industries will be relevant to almost 80 per cent of jobs. Our passion and commitment to ensuring our young people are prepared for the world of the future is at the forefront of our thinking and of everything we do within the academy.”
