VOLUNTEERS from the open air show Kynren joined a national campaign to mark the 70th anniversary of the NHS.

The attraction in Bishop Auckland is among a number of buildings, historic monuments and high profile sites to light up in blue to mark the occasion.

As part of the #LightUpBlue campaign, scenery on Kynren’s 7.5acre stage was bathed in blue and 40 NHS staff past or present from the 1,000 volunteer cast and crew spelled out NHS on its stage.

A spokesperson said: "This year Kynren’s performance is ‘In Remembrance’ with new scenes that commemorate some very special anniversaries, and the birth of the NHS is one of the greatest shining moments of modern history that is honoured with pride during the 90-minute performance, which allows our audience to time travel from Roman Britain, all the way through to the most uplifting and glorious moments in modern history. We encourage all visitors to our world-class show, to give pause for thought and for what the NHS stands for and to appreciate the hope that it has given in the history of our great nation."
