PLANS for a North-East university’s new maths building have been officially submitted.
Durham University wants to build the new department on its upper Mountjoy site.
If approved, the four-storey building will house the university’s mathematics and computer science departments, which are currently operating at capacity.
It would be built on a 6.25 acre site, which is accessible via South Road and Hollingside Lane, and is close to a number of other university buildings.
The development is part of the university’s estates masterplan, developed as part of its 10-year strategy.
A statement prepared on behalf of the university says the proposed development will result in £41.9m of direct investment and will allow the departments to grow, creating 70 new jobs for academic and support staff.
It adds: “A new building is essential to facilitate the level of growth identified in the strategy and the growth is benchmarked against comparable national and international university facilities.”
