A BAND whose annual march has delighted residents for decades is appealing for donations to ensure the tradition continues.
Stanhope Silver Band marches through the Weardale town every September on its way to Stanhope Show.
However, in recent years, the band has struggled to cover the cost of the road closure required. The price of hiring a traffic management company to oversee the closure is £350 plus VAT, and although the band recoups about £100 by holding a collection on the day, it is still taking a financial hit.
This year, the band, a registered charity, is appealing for donations in advance.
Steve Donnelly, secretary, said: “The march is a Stanhope tradition and it would be such a shame if it had to stop, but we are a charity and we have other costs to cover. We hope the people of Weardale will support us.”
Donations can be left at the Weardale Gazette Offices in Market Place, Stanhope, or by contacting Mr Donnelly on 07966445650 or through the Stanhope Silver Band Facebook page.
