TRADITIONAL St George's Day celebrations took place in Darlington town centre yesterday.

The Town Crier stood at the Market Cross, in front of Binns, to lead the event and to raise a toast to the patron saint of England.

Mayor Jan Taylor and her consort, Councillor Chris Taylor, were in attendance.

And library mascot Deefor the Dragon made a special appearance to share the moment with passersby at noon.

As always, glasses of port were handed out to shoppers to join in the traditional toast.

And red roses provided by Darlington florist Flowers by Nattrass were handed out to people on a first-come, first-served basis.
