THE industrial heritage of a rural County Durham village is being championed thanks to new welcome signs.

Witton Park, near Bishop Auckland, is now home to three signs informing visitors the small settlement was the start of the Stockton and Darlington Railway line.

The signs were installed this week thanks to a combined £3,180 grant from Durham County Councillors Christine Wilson and Rob Yorke, via Bishop Auckland and Shildon AAP.

Cllr Yorke said: “We’ve done a lot of research on the industrial heritage of the village and what we found was that the railway line started in Witton Park but not many people realise that.

“It took coal from here to Eaglescliffe and because of the railway we got the steelworks in Witton Park.”
