LANDMARK: Whitby Abbey has been chosen by Mary Beard for A History of England in 100 Places campaign
A PICTURESQUE abbey has been named as one of the top ten places that best represent the history of England.
Whitby Abbey has been chosen by scholar Mary Beard in the loss and destruction category in Historic England’s campaign A History of England in 100 Places.
The landmark will feature in new episodes of the recently-launched podcast series, which explores their importance to England’s identity.
The Benedictine abbey was first destroyed in the dissolution of the monasteries and was hit by German warships in December 1914.
It inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and was described by Ms Beard as “one of the most striking instances in the country of the haunting beauty of ruins.”
